Field notes / For candidates
Before you say yes.
A title and hourly rate don’t describe the whole job. Use the conversation to understand the day you would actually be signing up for.
Ask about the working week.
- What time does the shift start and finish?
- How often is overtime expected, and how much notice is typical?
- Where is the work, and does the location change?
- What does a normal day look like for someone in this seat?
Understand the first few weeks.
- Who will train me, and how long is the training period?
- What do you expect me to handle independently on day one?
- Who is my supervisor, and how do I raise a question?
- What equipment or protective gear does the company provide?
Get the offer details together.
Review the written pay terms, shift differentials where applicable, benefits eligibility, start date and any stated conditions. Ask the employer to clarify anything that differs from the conversation.
Think about the fit you want.
Compare the role with your priorities: commute, schedule, kind of work, learning opportunities and how the team communicates. If something important is unclear, ask before committing.
Tell your recruiter what matters most to you. A useful introduction starts with a clear picture of the job you would actually want.
